Kuidas optimeerida biogaasijaamade ja farmide vahel liikuva läga ja digestaatide transporti ja mahtusid?

Biogaasijaamu ja farme teenindav Soome ettevõte Kuljetus Tero Liukas Oy otsib pädevat partnerit, kes arendaks digitaalset tööriista biogaasijaamade ja farmide vahelise läga ja digestaatide transpordi haldamiseks, aruandluseks ja omavaheliseks arveldamiseks. Skellefteå Kraft Hackathon – Küttematerjali andmeanalüüs ja seire

Kuidas saada digitaliseeritult täpseid ja kvaliteetseid andmeid biokütuste füüsikaliste ja geomeetriliste omaduste kohta ning teavitusi olulistest või ohtlikest muutustest materjalikuhjade ümber või sees?

Rootsi energiaettevõte Skellefteå Kraft soovib digitaliseerimise abil tagada kaugkütteks kasutatava küttematerjali kuhjade kvaliteedi ja jälgitavuse. Põhja-Rootsis tegutsev kaugkütteteenuse pakkuja Skellefteå Kraft kasutab soojuse tootmiseks peamiselt metsatööstuse jääke, st igal aastal ligikaudu 500 000 tonni biokütust. Ettevõte otsib lahendust, et saada parem ülevaade soojatootmiseks kasutatavatest biokütuse kogustest, liikudes tänaselt osaliselt manuaalselt süsteemilt digitaalsete lahenduste poole, mis võimaldaksid arvutada biokütuse energiasisaldust ja jälgida laoseisu, tarneid ja küttematerjali seisundit.

Karlstads Energi Hackathon – Veinikorkide tööstuslik taaskasutus

Kuidas leida tööstuslik ringmajanduslahendus looduslikust korgist veinipudelikorkide taaskasutuseks, mis pakuks kõrgemat väärtust kui lihtsalt põletamine?

Igal aastal toodetakse maailmas tohutult veinipudelikorke, kuid need ei jõua taaskasutusse. Enamik neist visatakse prügisse ja põletatakse, erinevalt paljudest ringlusse suunatavatest teistest korgitüüpidest. Stora Enso Hackathon – Puidu kaitsmine väiksema veekasutusega

Kuidas vähendada puidusinet piiravat veekasutust puidutööstuses ja võidelda puitmaterjali kahjuritega?

Puiduseened (sine) ning erinevad puidukahjurid tekitavad puidutööstusele suurt kahju, kuna puit kaotab oma tugevusomadused ja kaubandusliku välimuse. Pikendamaks puidust toodete eluiga välistingimustes, tuleb puitu kaitsta hallituse, puiduseente ja puidukahjurite eest, millega kaasneb väga suur veekulu. VõISTE Hackathon "Mining the green gold from Greenhouse Biomass"

 

In a greenhouse, plants grow by converting water, fertiliser and CO2 into biomass. For some crops, the final product includes the entire plant, but in case of tomatoes only part of the total produced biomass reaches the consumer. The roots, leaves, stems and nonstandard fruits of a tomato plant are mostly regarded as organic waste.

At Võiste Hackathon we invite you to offer solutions how to extract more value from greenhouse products and residual flows whilst producing in a cleaner way. We are open to exploring new business opportunities and research collaborations.

What is it about?

Võiste Greenhouse is the largest tomato producer in Estonia, with about 6000 square metres of growing area. This rural horticulture company has been growing vegetables for the past 60 years, last 20 of which operating as a family business. Every year, from April to October, up to 50 tons per month of biomass consisting of roots, stems, leaves and non-standard tomatoes is produced and needs to be disposed of. Today, this residual biomass is turned into compost at the company’s production compound, but in order to become more sustainable and speed up its circular transition, the company is looking for new technologies, solutions and partnerships to turn the residual biomass into valuable resources.

Making use of residual biomass from greenhouses is a challenge, but also provides opportunities to set up new value chains. A lot can be obtained from biomass: salts for fertilisers, organic matter or biostimulants for growing media, fibre for packaging and building materials, proteins for food and feed, aromas and dyes for the cosmetics industry and medicinal compounds for the pharmaceutical industry, to name just a few. We want to explore the many ways of extracting value from horticultural residue, so:

What is Võiste Greenhouse looking for?

Võiste Greenhouse is looking for economically feasible valorisation of horticultural residue biomass to increase its circular transition. Valorisation can be achieved by both high-tech and low-tech solutions, preferably to be realised on-site. In case of further use as material (e.g. as building material, chemical feedstock, fertilizer, soil improver) or as food or feed, off-site solutions in partnerships are also welcome. The goal is to implement greenhouse horticulture that not only contributes through the end product, but also valorises its residual flows and where local, renewable sources are used and material cycles are closed, possibly in collaboration with other sectors. The company is interested in solutions providers who can offer innovative concepts, technologies, and equipment to effectively utilize the specified residues. The company’s interest ranges from discovering new business opportunities to potentially establishing partnerships in research projects.

Selection criteria

Võiste Hackathon’s aim is to look into the state-of-art use of horticultural biomass streams for local solutions and to identify potential markets that can benefit from horticultural by-products, including, but not limited to: nutritional use, pharmaceutical use and material use. The seasonal availability and quality of the biomass streams, heterogeneity of the material, as well as possible accumulation of plant protection residues must be accounted for.

In evaluating the proposed ideas/solutions, the following aspects will be considered:

• innovativeness of the idea/solution

• economic viability of the idea/solution when applied by Võiste Greenhouse

• technical feasibility of the idea/solution when applied at the company’s operations

• environmental impact of the solution

• valorization potential of the side streams by level of added value created from the biomass

• compliance with the regulatory requirements in Estonia.

The hackathon is free of charge and open to all innovators, including individuals, entrepreneurs, student start-ups and academic/scientific/research entities.

Võiste Greenhouse - the innovative producer of tomatoes in Estonia.

With the ever-growing emphasis on short supply chains and lowering our carbon footprint, the market for local produce is growing. Võiste’s main difference from imported tomatoes is freshness and a short logistics chain, as it ensures that the tomatoes reach store shelves 1-2 days after picking. The company also use biological plant protection products to keep the tomatoes healthy and pick them as ripe as possible - this way the taste-binding properties are also preserved. The resource intensive horticulture sector has witnessed drastically increased production costs in recent years, and as the local growing conditions cannot compete with the sunny and warm climate of Western and Southern Europe, Võiste Greenhouse has become focused on smart production and invested in reducing production costs through automation and precision fertilization. Through its spin-off companies Tami Automatics and TAMIATICS, it has initiated research collaboration with various universities and its production site also serves as a living lab for R&D activities.

Hackathon participants

This challenge is open for all interested teams: start-ups, established companies, research institutes, educational organizations, individual innovators etc. Your team can also consist of collaboration between several organizations. The hackathon is international and working language is English. Hackathon participation is free. We will also offer compensation for travel expenses to international teams from the Baltic Sea region (Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).

Jury consists of representatives of Võiste Greenhouse, Estonian University of Life Sciences, Pärnu County Innovation Hub, The Centre of Estonian Rural Research and Knowledge, as well as the Organizer’s representatives.

March 22, 2024, 16.00 CET: Deadline for submitting an application. The application includes your preliminary idea proposal and a short description of the expertise in your team.

March 26, 2024, 16.00 CET: Selection of teams is published.

April 12, 2024, 10.00-12.00 CET: Kick-off event of the Võiste Hackathon Organized as an online event, where participating teams will meet each other and representatives of Võiste Greenhouse to hear more about the challenge and expectations of Võiste Greenhouse. Teams will present their preliminary ideas and get feedback for further development.

May 16-17, 2024: Hackathon Days: consultation of the idea/solution with all mentors (5 – 10 experts and practitioners) preparation of the final version of the presented idea/solution presentation of the idea/solution by teams/individual innovators. Võiste Hackathon will be organized by Pärnu County Development Centre in its Business Incubator (Ringi 35, Pärnu, Estonia). The program will start in the afternoon of 16/05 with mentoring for the participant teams and networking in the evening. On 17/05, there will be a pitching session with presentations on teams’ solution proposals to Võiste Greenhouse. After Jury deliberation, winner(s) are announced. If you are not able to travel onsite, online participation is also possible.

COSUN BEET HACKATHON BY WITENO

The processing of sugar beets into white sugar and bioethanol, as well as biomethane, at the Cosun Beet Company's Anklam site in Germany, generates various biogenic residues. With a goal to become a green beet-biorefinery, we aim to offer sustainable and climate-friendly products for different markets.

Therein we actively seek solutions and partnerships to transform residues from beet processing into valuable resources. Ourfocus areas include utilizing beet leaves, beet soil, digestate from our biogas plant and vinasse from the bioethanol plant. We are open to exploring new business opportunities and research collaborations.

What is it about?

The Cosun Beet Company's Anklam site processes sugar beets into white sugar, bioethanol, and biomethane, resulting in various biogenic residues. Approximately 2 million tons of sugar beets are processed from September to January, with intermediate products stored and bioethanol and biomethane produced throughout the year. The goal is to transform the factory into a green biorefinery, offering a diverse product portfolio for different markets. The company aims to provide sustainable and climate-friendly products for various purposes by exploring new technologies, solutions, and partnerships to convert the residues into valuable resources.

What is Cosun Beet looking for?

Specifically, the company is seeking solutions for:

• utilizing beet leaves currently left on the field

• 50,000 tons per year of beet soil from cleaning processes (60-70% of dry matter)

• 6,000 tons per year of sewage sludge from the own waste watertreatment plant (5-8% of dry matter, based on ongoing expansion up to 10,000 tons per year)

• 70,000 tons of carbonation lime from the juice purification

• 90,000 tons per year of digestate from the biogas plant (5% of dry matter, with planned expansion), and

• 190,000 tons per year of vinasse from the bioethanol plant (6% of dry matter)

Cosun Beet Company is actively searching for providers who can offer innovative concepts, technologies, and equipment to effectively utilize the specified residues. Our interest extends beyond discovering new business opportunities to potentially establishing partnerships in research projects. Depending on the level of development of the proposed ideas, participants in the Cosun Beet hackathon have the chance for either business cooperation or the initiation of joint projects or pilots to test their presented concepts. The nature of the solution will determine whether Cosun Beet Company becomes directly involved in joint piloting and/or commercial collaboration. It is possible to send in suggestions for only one of the listed residues or a combination of a few. A further perspective might be to collect and integrate otherregional plant-based residuals. A way of thinking might be to create mixtures of the residues to convert the material into new products f.i. for the agricultural sector, the food industry, the chemical industry, and others.

What is “Cosun Beet”?

Cosun Beet (CBC) is a modern and innovative company in the food industry. Currently, we primarily produce white sugar and bioethanol from sugar beets at our Anklam site in Germany. Anklam is located close to the Baltic Sea, 190 km north of Berlin. Our sugar beets are grown by 350 farmers in Northeast Germany. We make sure to utilize residual materials from the production in our biogas plant to produce biogas.

Our goal is to create plant-based solutions for a sustainable future, including food products, animal feed, proteins, biobased products, and green energy. We call these solutions Bright Beet Solutions. Our team is passionate about maximizing the potential of sugar beets and working togethertowards a circular economy. We strive for zero waste and aim to optimize the use of all parts of the sugar beets.

Evaluation criteria

1. Sustainability and Ecological Assessment: The extent to which the proposed solution aligns with sustainable practices and contributes to ecological preservation is assessed. This includes energy and resource efficiency as well as minimum environmental impact.

2. Degree of Innovation: The level of novelty and originality of the proposed solution is considered. Innovative approaches that offer unique and creative ways to convert the residues into valuable products are given preference.

3. Potential for Economic Viability: The solution's potential to become economically viable is evaluated. This includes assessing its market potential, cost-effectiveness, and potential for generating revenue or cost savings.

4. Technical Feasibility: The technical feasibility of implementing the proposed solution is considered. This involves evaluating the availability of necessary resources, the TRL, infrastructure and expertise required for successful implementation.

5. Quality of the New Products: The quality of the products derived from the residues is an important factor. The proposed solution should ensure that the resulting products meet or exceed industry standards and customer expectations.

6. Compliance with Regulatory Requirements in Germany: The solution must in perspective comply with relevant regulations and standards in Germany. This includes environmental regulations, safety standards, and any otherlegal requirements applicable to the specific industry or sector.

What exactly are we looking for as part of the Targi Kielce Hackathon? 

In order to significantly reduce the environmental burden resulting from trade fair activities, we are looking for:  

  • biocircular product innovation with functional and aesthetic potential to replace polypropylene carpets commonly used in the exhibition industry; This innovation should:  

o meet the bio-product criteria (made from organic materials available on a renewable basis); 

o implement the principles of circular bioeconomy (biodegradation or the possibility of processing a waste bioproduct).  

  • recycling technologies of floor coverings used by Targi Kielce so far, along with a presentation of the possibilities of obtaining and using the results of recycling by Targi Kielce or other entities in the existing or new value chain. 

In terms of biocircular product innovation, it is expected to be characterized by: 

  • the right level of strength, slip resistance and grip  

  • ease and safety of assembly and disassembly 

  • low weight  

  • A modular solution in dimensions multiples of 1m is acceptable colour repeatability of individual options - colour consistency when combining different rolls, selection from a palette of about 12 colours  

  • required fire protection properties 

  • easy cleaning of dirt in an ecological way (dirt typical for office space, communication - cleaning after the market day) 

  • reusability 

and will be: 

  • profitable – a solution that is comparable in cost or cheaper than the currently used carpets; 

  • aesthetically and visually attractive – a solution acceptable to exhibitors ordering the construction of exhibition stands 

With regard to the recycling of carpets used by Targi Kielce so far, it is expected that:  

  • innovative ideas for reusing or later processing the carpet material into other products used by Targi Kielce or other entities will be presented  

  • The ideas presented should be related to used carpets, or individual/selected components of these used carpets.  

  • the ideas presented should be environmentally sustainable 

  • the ideas presented should be economically effective 

Why is this challenge so important for the environment and the circular bioeconomy? 

The carpets currently used by Targi Kielce is uneconomical and non-ecological. Here's why: 

  • the composition of the carpets is 100% polypropylene fiber, the bottom layer is SBR rubber and glue and PVAC; 

  • carpets in most cases are suitable for single use; After the event, which usually lasts 2-5 days, these carpets are almost entirely dismantled treated as waste; only a small part of it (about 20%) is taken by exhibitors or reused (a second time), but ultimately constitutes waste; 

  • the purchase and installation of carpets for each organized trade fair event generates a huge amount of waste each year (250 – 270 containers per year), which ends up in landfills; Targi Kielce orders and consumes approx. 100 thousand square meters of carpets per year! 

  • The current solution also means the emission of pollutants related to the production of carpets, the life cycle of which is very short and irreversible when used by Targi Kielce. 

  • The use of currently used carpets is also associated with: 

  • the use of double-sided adhesive tapes that generate additional waste (protective film, glue, packaging) 

  • After dismantling carpet tapes, it is often necessary to mechanically or chemically clean the floor (workload, chemicals, equipment, etc.) of adhesive and tape residues 

Why is it worth taking part in Targi Kielce Hackathon? 

The winner(s) of the Hackathon will receive a chance to establish a long-term business relationship with Targi Kielce, or the opportunity to prepare and implement a joint development project / joint tests of the proposed solution.  

It should be emphasized that the potential market for new product and/or technological proposals is the entire global exhibition industry!  

The winner(s) will also have the opportunity to participate free of charge as an exhibitor at any trade fair event of their choice at Targi Kielce (season 2024 – 2025), at the stand with modern exhibition buildings.  

All participants of the final session of the Hackathon also get the chance to: 

  • development of the commercial potential of the presented solutions, also thanks to the expert and mentoring support provided by the organizers; 

  • establishing new business and networking relationships with companies and specialists from common or related industry areas;  

  • establishing new international contacts;  

  • significant increase of visibility and recognition of the Team and its solution.  

What are the terms and conditions of participation in Targi Kielce Hackathon? 

Targi Kielce Hackathon is open to all interested innovative entities, In particular: 

  • Individuals 

  • Entrepreneurs 

  • scientific entities 

  • research entities 

  • academic/student entities.  

Applying Teams may also consist of representatives of various entities.  

Targi Kielce Hackathon is an international event. The working languages are Polish and English.  

Participation in Targi Kielce Hackathon is free of charge. Innovators - international teams from the Baltic Sea Region (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia) are reimbursed for their travel expenses.

Targi Kielce Hackathon is implemented and supported as part of the project "BioBoosters – boosting the circular transition" (https://interreg-baltic.eu/project/bioboosters/). The aim of this international project is to increase the level of innovation of entrepreneurs  
bioeconomy and circular economy.
