HEMP HACKATHON

BioBoosters Nordic Hemp Hackathon – "Hemp Hack: Innovate to Elevate"

The aim of the BioBoosters Nordic Hemp Hackathon "Hemp Hack: Innovate to Elevate" is to develop the most optimal and efficient ways to valorize hemp fibers, dust, and hurd obtained during the decortication of hemp stalks in Nordic Hemp.

We are not looking for conventional solutions like using hemp hurd for hempcrete, dust for briquettes, or fibers for clothing. Instead, we seek innovative approaches that push the boundaries of current applications. By developing solutions or technologies that propose novel uses for these hemp by-products, you can demonstrate creativity, sustainability, and economic viability. Join us in adding value to the by-products of hemp valorization in Estonia, the third-largest hemp producer in Europe.

Are you ready to innovate to elevate?

The Challenge

New solutions for hemp valorization are needed to maximize resource efficiency, ensuring every part of the hemp plant is utilized effectively, thereby reducing waste. With the EU's hemp cultivation area increasing by 60% from 20,540 hectares in 2015 to 33,020 hectares in 2022, and production volume growing by 84.3% to 179,020 tons, the potential for innovative applications is significant. Estonia, the second-largest hemp grower in Europe, cultivated hemp on 7,120 hectares in 2022 (https://nordichemp.ee/biggest-hemp-grower-in-europe/).

New solutions are crucial for environmental sustainability, enhancing hemp's natural benefits, such as sequestering 9 to 15 tons of CO2 per hectare and producing biodegradable materials.

Hemp is the way to a more environmentally friendly future! There are many facts which support that, just to name a few:

Economically, innovative hemp applications can stimulate growth and create jobs, particularly in rural areas. Emerging uses in health and wellness, such as dietary supplements and skincare products, meet consumer demand and promote well-being. These solutions support the circular economy by reusing and recycling all parts of the hemp plant, aligning with Europe’s sustainability goals. The need for new, creative approaches has never been more critical to fully harness the potential of this versatile crop.

Who can participate in the Hackathon?

Hackathon is open for all interested teams: large companies, SMEs, research institutes, research groups, student groups, start-ups, and other actors. Your team can also consist of collaboration between several organizations. Hackathon is international and working language is English.

Nordic Hemp offers Hackathon participants two opportunities based on the maturity of their idea: business cooperation or the chance to start or develop a joint project or pilot. This includes using our biomaterials to test the winning idea(s).

Evaluation criteria

1. Innovation: How unique and ground-breaking is the proposed solution?

2. Feasibility: Can the solution be realistically implemented with current technology?

3. Sustainability: Does the solution promote environmental sustainability?

4. Economic Viability: Is the solution cost-effective and scalable?

5. Team: Capacity of the team to establish cooperation with Nordic Hemp
